How to help a dog with separation anxiety has long been a challenge. But could CBD oil be the key?
Researchers estimate that humans have been breeding dogs for over 18,000 years. In that time, we've developed over 300 breeds to accentuate various desirable characteristics, of which loving human companionship was a sought-after trait. In doing so, we've "created" the perfect animal friend. At the same time, we've also developed an animal that loves his or her owner so much that nearly 20-40% of dogs suffer from separation anxiety.
This fear and anxiety may seem fleeting to us, but it can have a lasting negative impact on your dog in the form of:
- Skin disorders
- Reduced immune function
- Shortened lifespan
- Increased accidents or acting out
- Refusal to eat when you're not around
Most of us don't have the luxury of taking our dogs with us everywhere we go. Formal therapy and training can get expensive. Putting them in a crate to avoid home destruction seems cruel. Training them at home can be incredibly time-consuming. Putting them on pet anxiety medication seems like a viable solution but you don't want to sedate or alter the personality of your dog. So, what do you do?
Here's where CBD may be able to help.
CBD as a Dog Anxiety Medication
Cannabis has many active chemical compounds in it. CBD is one over 100. It's completely non-psychoactive and contains less than 0.3% of THC (tetrahydrocannabinol), which makes it safe for dogs to consume. On the contrary, THC—the compound linked to marijuana's intoxicating effects—is actually toxic to dogs and could cause serious harm if ingested. So never under any circumstance give your dog a product that contains THC.
Rather than causing a euphoric"high," CBD provides a balanced feeling with zero psychoactive effects. It does this by reacting with the cannabinoid receptors found in your dog's brain (and yours too). These receptors are an important part of your nervous system. They utilize naturally produced hormones to help the body regulate internal homeostasis. And with the correct CBD dosage, your dog should feel a sense of contentment (not sedation) that lasts for several hours until it slowly fades away.
A recent scientific review of research on the anti-anxiety benefits of CBD for both lab animals and humans found that studies completed over the past 10 years, "clearly suggest an anxiolytic-like effect of CBD in both animal models and healthy volunteers." Anxiolytic means "inhibits anxiety and/or panic attacks." So if you're looking for dog anxiety medication, CBD may be the best option. It's natural, safe and will allow your dog to play, eat, and do other things dogs enjoy without the symptoms of anxiety.
Tips On Finding The CBD Dosage For Dogs With Anxiety
The exact amount you give to your dog depends on several factors. Primarily, the size of your dog. For smaller dogs, you'll want to begin with a low dose. For larger dogs, you'll likely need a bigger dosage. Whatever you do, just make sure to start small and work your way up until you find your dog's happy medium. But also, take into account the quality of the CBD product itself. If you get cheaper, less potent CBD (something we don't recommend), you may need to administer twice as much.
However, with a quality CBD product, apply the following dosing rules:
- Give CBD to your pet at least 30 minutes before you must leave.
- Give 2-4 drops every 6-12 hours, as needed. One dropper = 1 ml, so this is 2-4 ml.
- Start with the lower dose and gradually increase.
You can use CBD oil tinctures with a dropper to precisely administer a dose either in food or directly under your dog's tongue. Some dogs will respond better to direct administration than others. The trick is to experiment until you discover what works best.
Choosing A Trusted CBD Product For Your Dog's Anxiety
Any trusted brand will clearly state how much CBD is in their product and will give you information on the best practices for dosing your pet. Their products should also be tested by a reliable third-party so that you know your dog is consuming pure CBD from a trust-worthy source.
Here at Curaleaf Hemp, our pet CBD products go through rigorous testing to verify the quality, safety, and efficacy. Every product is 100% non-psychoactive and free of THC.
