CBD Oil For Pets 101: What You Need To Know

Derived from cannabis plants, including hemp, cannabidiol (CBD) is a type of cannabinoid that can be beneficial in a lot of ways, especially for your pets. CBD became fully legal in December of 2018, and since then, many are using this supplement for everything from chronic pain to anxiety. In fact, as many as 72 percent of Americans are willing to try CBD to treat pain. Yet many still have no idea that using CBD oil for pets is even a thing.

Since CBD derived from hemp does not contain tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), it is a non-psychoactive supplement and considered safe for most pets. At Curaleaf Hemp, we want to make sure anyone who can benefit from CBD is properly informed—particularly pet parents, as there are many reasons to use CBD oil for pets.

Curaleaf Hemp's In-Depth Guide to Using CBD Oil for Pets

To date, there has been a lot more focus on studying how CBD affects the human body than the bodies of canines or felines. However, a lot of the studies involving CBD, even those in reference to suspected human reactions, have been done on animals (mostly primates and mice). While the studies on CBD oil for pets may be in their infancy stages, things do look promising. According to the AKC, scientists do know for sure that:

"...cannabinoids interact with the endocannabinoid receptors located in the central and peripheral nervous systems, which help maintain balance in the body and keep it in a normal healthy state."

Benefits of CBD Oil for Pets

Given that CBD has benefits for humans, it's suspected that it can also positively impact animals—although more scientific studies are needed to better understand its interaction with pets. Yet the few pet-centric CBD studies that do exist show a great deal of promise.

One clinical trial published in 2019 tested CBD on dogs with osteoarthritis for pain. The results showed that all participants were more active and experienced a visible reduction in pain. Plus, no ill side effects were reported by owners during the study. Additionally, research has been conducted on CBD as a potential treatment for seizure activity in dogs. Since CBD is known to be an effective anticonvulsant, it could potentially help control seizures for dogs in a safer way than the current medications allow.

CBD Oil for Pets Dosage Best Practices

We recommended that you start with lower doses of CBD oil for your pets and work your way up gradually. You don't want to begin with higher doses when you aren't certain how your pet will respond. So before you administer CBD to your pet for the first time you should:

  • Talk to your veterinarian for advice about dosage recommendations
  • Administer the CBD at a time when you will be with your pet to observe them closely
  • Explore our recommendations for dosage here to get an idea of where to start
  • Read the dosage guidelines on any CBD product package carefully

There is little known about the side effects of CBD for pets. However, it can be assumed that pets would or could experience similar side effects as humans. Therefore, watch out for signs of things like drowsiness, increased thirst, and possibly slight dizziness. Also, make sure to adjust dosages accordingly and talk to your vet.

The Best CBD Products for Pets & Where to Buy Them

When choosing CBD products for pets, make sure you are shopping with a reputable distributor. Just as you would put only quality ingredients in your body, the same should go for your pets. Most pet owners start with something easy to dose, such as a CBD tincture, but there are also edibles and even topicals on the market for pets.

Typically, the best pets will be made with:

  • Natural ingredients
  • No artificial flavors or agents
  • 0% THC content

It's equally important to look for a CBD supplier who conducts third-party lab testing to ensure the quality of their products, and that this information is freely accessible to the public.
