Hemp Oil Vs CBD Oil: Everything You Need To Know

Is hemp oil the same as CBD oil? The definitive answer is no. Yet, a lot of people, even some distributors, mistakenly use the names of these two products interchangeably. Unfortunately, this has led to a lot of confusion. So to set the record straight, here’s what you need to know about the differences between hemp oil vs CBD oil.

Hemp Oil

Hemp oil is specifically harvested from the hemp plant, which is the type of cannabis plant that produces THC levels so low that the plant is not considered psychoactive. Hemp oil is usually extracted from the seeds of the hemp plant. The seeds contain high concentrations of oil, and the oil is only harvested from industrial hemp plants.

Science Behind Hemp Oil Production

Hemp oil production is a pretty straightforward process. The seeds are rich in oils — about 50 percent of the weight of the seeds is actually just the contained oil inside. Before hemp oil can be harvested from seeds, the seeds have to go through a highly detailed process to remove any fragment of plant matter. Then hemp oil is extruded from the seeds, most often through a cold pressing process. Just as it sounds, cold pressing involves pushing the cleaned hemp seeds through a series of colanders until the oil is separated from the solid matter of the seeds.

Hemp Oil Uses and Benefits

Hemp oil is a natural product that many consider a superfood. When cooking, it can be used as an alternative to oils high in saturated fats and as a dressing or base oil for recipes.

The nutritional benefits of hemp oil include:

  • Contains polyunsaturated fats
  • High in omega-3 and omega-6
  • Known for its antioxidants

It's also used in everything from shampoo to cosmetics because it's a rich, natural source of vitamin E. Plus, it's considered a worthy replacement for petroleum in industrial manufacturing processes. For example, hemp oil can be used instead of petroleum to create some types of plastic material.

Cannabidiol (CBD) is rapidly becoming one of the most prized components of the hemp plant because of its proposed health benefits. It's one of over 100 natural cannabinoids found in the cannabis plant.

Science Behind CBD Oil Production

CBD is extracted from the hemp leaves, parts of the stalk, and the buds the hemp plant. There are numerous ways to extract CBD oil from hemp. Some processes require the use of solvents to force a chemical reaction that separates the CBD from the plant material. Others involve using solventless methods to extract the CBD. Here at Curaleaf Hemp, we utilize the CO2 extraction method to create pure, safe and effective CBD products that are completely free of unnecessary contaminants or additives.

CBD Oil Uses and Benefits

CBD is non-psychoactive, non-habit forming, and possesses powerful anti-inflammatory properties. Research from the National Institute Of Health indicates it can be used to help manage a wide range of health conditions, such as:

  • Anxiety and depression
  • Seizures and epilepsy
  • Chronic or arthritic pain
  • Skin conditions like eczema and acne

What Are The Primary Differences Between Hemp Oil and CBD Oil?

  • Hemp oil is always derived specifically from hemp. CBD oil can be derived solely from hemp but also from other types of cannabis plants.
  • Hemp oil usually contains low levels of CBD (about 25 parts per million according to The Mirror). CBD can be as much as 15 percent pure CBD.
  • Hemp oil has no real medical value. It is considered healthy for different purposes but doesn't really offer medicinal benefits. CBD does offer medical value.

What Is Hemp-Derived CBD Oil?

Hemp-derived CBD oil is CBD that is harvested specifically from hemp. Because most other cannabis plants contain high levels of THC, using them to harvest CBD increases the likelihood that it will contain some amount of THC. So to maintain the legality and purity of CBD products, it's safer to harvest the CBD from hemp.

Here at Curaleaf Hemp, all of our CBD oil products are 100% hemp-derived and free of psychoactive components.
