If you’ve read our blog before, you know all about the research-backed benefits of adding CBD to your health regimen. You know, for each ingestion method, and depending on the form in which you take it, how long it takes CBD oil to work. But just how much CBD (cannabidiol) oil should you take? And what are the factors upon which CBD dosage hinges? Are there any dangers inherent in taking too much CBD; or should you just dose until you start to feel the effects?
All these questions are important to consider—and today, we’re going to dig into all of them.
CBD dosage: what do doctors recommend?
Ideally, finding the proper CBD dosage would be as simple as looking at the FDA’s (Food and Drug Administration’s) prescribed RDI (Recommended Daily Intake). You might also be tempted to just simply ask your primary care doctor. Because CBD is a fairly new compound in the medical community, however, the FDA has not yet prescribed it an RDI for general pain and anxiety treatments. This is largely due to the fact that while evidence supports CBD as an effective treatment for a wide variety of physical and mental ailments, usage has not yet reached the clinical trial phase.
CBD has, however, gained widespread medical acceptance as a treatment for neurodegenerative diseases like Parkinson’s and Epilepsy. Earlier this year, the FDA approved Epidiolex, a CBD-based pharmaceutical, to treat two severe types of childhood (Dravet and LGS). The recommended started dosage for Epidiolex users is 2.5 mg, taken twice daily. While that’s a good place to start, it doesn’t tell the whole story.
Taking form into account
The form by which you ingest (or inhale) CBD oil is going to play a big role in how much CBD oil you should take. Different forms will inevitably have different potencies. This goes back to a concept called bioavailability.
When you administer CBD, only a certain amount enters your bloodstream—we call this bioavailability. The oral bioavailability of CBD is roughly 15 percent. So for every 100 mg of CBD you consume orally, only 15 mg will actually enter your bloodstream.
If you’re putting CBD tincture drops under your tongue, and you’re intent on having an exact dosage, you might have to do a little mental math on the fly. That means converting the CBD housed in your tincture bottle (which is measured in milligrams) to the amount of CBD that your dropper can hold (which is measured in milliliters).
Taking your ailment into account
On top of the factors we’ve already laid out, you should also keep in mind the ailment you’re trying to treat. Because there is not yet a “prescribed” dosage for many of the common ailments patients are treating with CBD, you should not assume that the ideal CBD oil dosage for anxiety is going to be the same as, say, the ideal CBD dosage for pain.
Luckily, the ailment you are treating typically informs the form in which you administer CBD. So if you have joint pain, you may find that 25 mg of CBD lotion significantly helps reduce inflammation. You can then alter your baseline dosage depending on the level of pain you’re experiencing in a given instance.
The most accurate way to dose CBD
A good overarching rule of thumb to keep in mind: you should be taking one to six milligrams of CBD for every 10 pounds of your body weight. Using that ratio as a guideline, you should then scale depending on the ailment your treating, the level the ailment your treating rises to, and the form by which you're ingesting or inhaling your CBD.
That in mind, there is no one-size-fits-all dosage that takes into account your unique body chemistry and the range of other factors we’ve discussed here. The best answer to the question, How much CBD oil should I take? is this: start small. Settle into a routine. That means not experimenting with too many different forms to start. This will allow you to find the administration route that works for you, and work up to a dosage you’re comfortable with.
