What does CBD stand for?
If you don't know what CBD stands for, you're not alone. Mashable surveyed about 2,000 people in January 2019, and only 39 percent of them knew what CBD meant in the phrase "CBD-infused."
CBD is the abbreviation for cannabidiol — one of more than 100 naturally occurring chemical compounds in cannabis. It's non-addictive, safe, and non-psychoactive so it doesn't cause an intoxicating high like THC, another compound found in the cannabis plant.
What does CBD oil do, and how does it work?
For many years, research on the compounds in cannabis was limited because of its federal drug classification. But when scientists discovered the endocannabinoid system in the early 1990s, they learned that the cannabinoid receptors in our brains were more abundant than any other type of receptor for neurotransmission in the human body.
Scientists also identified two types of cannabinoid receptors: CB1 and CB2. CB1 receptors are primarily found in the brain and central nervous system in areas associated with higher cognition, motor coordination, memory, appetite and emotions. CB2 receptors are associated with our immune system and are primarily located in our gut, liver, spleen, heart, bones, kidneys, blood vessels, reproductive organs and lymph cells.
Just as our bodies make natural pain relievers, such as endorphins, that bind to opiate receptors in the central nervous system, our bodies also make natural endocannabinoids. Two natural endocannabinoids have been discovered and studied so far: anandamide and 2-AG.
CBD oil contains distilled cannabidiol, which binds to the body's cannabinoid receptors. Because these receptors are located throughout different areas of the body in addition to the brain, CBD oil can benefit people in several different ways.It may help with:
- Neurological disease. A type of medical CBD called Epidiolex is officially approved by the Food and Drug Administration for the treatment of epilepsy. CBD oil may also benefit people with Parkinson's disease and Alzheimer's disease, among other neurodegenerative diseases.
- Depression and anxiety. Studies have begun to show positive effects of CBD on relieving anxiety and depression.
- Pain relief. People who use CBD report relief from pain, inflammation and stiffness from sports or repetitive motion injuries and chronic pain conditions.
- Cancer and cancer symptoms: CBD may benefit cancer patients experiencing nausea, vomiting, and pain from cancer treatments or cancer itself. Studies are underway to discover whether CBD could kill or slow the growth of cancer cells.
- Heart health. Recent studies have shown the potential benefits of CBD in reducing levels of unhealthy cholesterol and increasing levels of healthy cholesterol. Blood pressure may also benefit from CBD.
How to use CBD oil and ways to use it
You can take CBD oil in different ways, depending on your body's needs and your own preferences. All of our CBD products are designed to relieve pain or meet other health needs with pure CBD and other natural ingredients, including essential oils.
Vape pens can deliver doses of CBD on the go to provide relief on an as-needed basis. Here at Curaleaf Hemp, we make the highest quality disposable vape pens, each containing 225 mg of pure CBD. Different formulas meet different needs. For example, our Relax disposable vape pen is meant to relieve tension and stress, with CBD, a subtle floral vanilla flavor, and scent from vanilla beans and ylang-ylang flowers.
Our vape pens are created for different needs with reliably exact amounts of pure, full-spectrum CBD oil and other essential oils. Options include Relieve, Relax, Digest, Revive and Uplift.
Tinctures combine CBD with neutral and essential oils to provide relief for a variety of needs. When taking CBD oil orally, drops of a tincture should be placed under the tongue, where it will be absorbed quickly into the bloodstream. The rest of the CBD tincture is swallowed, entering the body more slowly through the digestive system. All of our tinctures are designed for different needs and include pure CBD oil and essential oils offering flavors that provide a delicious taste and herbal benefits. Some of our tinctures with full-spectrum CBD oil include Digest, Relax, Relieve, Revive, and Uplift.
Because CBD receptors are located throughout the body, topical CBD applied directly to painful areas can provide relief within minutes. Our CBD lotion comes in a lemongrass or menthol scent and can be applied directly to your skin. For long-lasting pain relief, we also have CBD pain relief patches that offer 25 mg of CBD per patch along with soothing menthol and camphor.
